Cool story, but average gameplay

Strengths: Story, characters, soundtrack, FMV's

Weakness: Combat, not scary, repetitive

When a game is billed as a horror title, one expects the game to be scary. Rule of Rose is not (Unless you find children scary, then the game is terrifying). The gameplay isn't good either, however the story is intriguing and the game has beautiful FMV's, which make the game worth at least a rental. Rule of Rose's most glaring problem is its combat system, which is clunky and unresponsive. Even...

Rule of Rose

Strengths: Storyline, atmosphere, graphics

Weakness: non-intuitive puzzles, controls sometimes

I had my eye on this game when it was announced. 1. Because it is a horror game, one of my fav genres 2. Because it is an Atlus game and they have a great track record. When it finally dropped to a reasonable price, I picked it up. I was not disappointed. Overall, the game is great - graphics and atmospheric visuals are awesome. My only gripe with the game is the control scheme/camera and the...

Not quite the game genre fans had hoped for. . .

Strengths: Thought-provoking storyline, great cinemas, solid in-game graphics, captivating atmosphere, mature themes

Weakness: Weak combat, limited/uninspired enemy design, neither scary nor risque as advertised, not much fun to play

In its advertising and packaging, Rule of Rose appears to be one of those "only in Japan" type of games where the combination of mature subject matter and young female characters would effectively ban it from a stateside release. Somehow Rule of Rose still managed to get released here; although, limited advertising and print numbers mean it can still be hard to find. The mature themes and complex...

Rule of Rose

The unlucky girl. That’s what the protagonist, Jennifer, is referred to as in Atlus USA’s latest game, Rule of Rose. Well, if this girl is unlucky then I need to start buying lottery tickets. To start with, Jennifer is an orphan in the 1930’s. Her parents were killed in a zeppelin crash and the game starts off with our poor unfortunate heroine on the way to the orphanage. Jennifer’s...
