Breakdown Xbox

Strengths: Graphics, sound, story.

Weakness: Gameplay

I bought this game after hearing my friends rave about the story and how it's like no other sci-fi plot I've ever seen or read. So I picked it up not expecting much and thinking it'll be another FPS. Boy was I wrong, from the get go you'll be absorbed into the game and it helps that it's a really good looking game too. The gameplay itself can be a little boring at times since the AI is not that hard nor are the options available to you to dispose of the enemies but it's still fun using the first person fist fighting moves. The story is the real draw here, the game has one of the best and most refreshing sci-fi plots in a long time. It's hollywood caliber I would say, but once it's over, it's over. Not a very long game but still fun while it lasts.

Breakdown Xbox

Strengths: Great Story, Innovative Gameplay, Addicting

Weakness: Weak Sound, Decent Graphics, Some Noticable Glitches

Breakdown is a brand new experience that has been introduced by the Japanese developer Namco. The story is told in complete first-person perspective. There are one or two cut-scenes, but for the most part, you never leave your character's view. I won't ruin the story for you, but I will tell you, it is one of the best I have ever played. This game could easily be translated into a movie and be a big success. This game ends up being very innovative because it feels like an adventure/platformer while being seen in the first person view. It is done fairly well and for the most part works. This includes great voice acting which, combined with the story and gameplay, and makes it hard to put this game down. Regrettably, there are a few noticeable flaws. First, gun fire sounds fake. This isn’t too bad since there isn’t a whole lot of gun fire, but it is noticeable. Also, when fighting hand to hand, the responsive feedback is bad. It is difficult for at least to tell if I was actually hitting the enemy. Finally, the graphics at some parts seem sub-par to Xbox standards. There are often "jaggies" which damper the experience. But overall, these flaws should not impact weather you buy this game or not. Breakdown is another great sleeper hit for the Xbox and should not be passed up. Combined with a currently low price tag at most places, this is a must buy.

Breakdown Xbox

Strengths: Unique first-person sequences and hand-to-hand combat mode

Weakness: Weak storyline; underdeveloped main character

This game has many novel ideas that the developers didn't do a decent job with. The weapons you'll use are basic, ranging from a pistol to a laser weapon, but relatively inefficient in doing damage to enemies.

The enemy AI is weak and ineffective, unless they surround you with sheer numbers.

Overall, the game seemed underdeveloped, given the content that was used.

Breakdown Xbox

Strengths: The completely first-person view is a nice change, graphics are good, immersive and thrilling storyline, good voice acting

Weakness: Needing to manually pick up inventory gets a little old, XBox exclusive, complete first person experience takes a little getting used to

First person is taken to a new level in this game, as /everything/ is first person, including looking around, climbing and jumping, as well as picking up inventory. It makes for a very immersive experience, though it can be a little disconserting at times, due to the complete first person perspective. Needing to do an inventory action to pick up inventory gets a little old after the first bunch of times.

The story definately makes up for any shortcomings, as it's well written and well done. The voice acting also helps out here, as it's some of the best around that I've heard.

Overall, it's a great game to show off the XBox (and it's only for the XBox) and it's a great story as well.

Breakdown

Strengths: Graphics, storyline, voice acting

Weakness: Slow in the beginning

Breakdown is an action game/FPS that starts out slowly, but is carried along by its excellent storyline.

At the beginning of the game, you wake up in an enclosed room with no recollection of how you got there and what is going on. Armed with only your fists, a girl helps you to get out of the room, where you are promptly attacked by soldiers with guns and other weapons. This may not sound like a slow start, but the story just continues to get better from there.

The graphics are solid and so is the voice acting. Overall, I would highly recommend this game.

Breakdown

Strengths: Unique FPS. Story.

Weakness: Difficulty level may be too hard for some.

Breakdown is played from a first person perspective, but it's not the typical first person shooter. Instead there is a heavy focus on hand to hand combat.

The unusual gameplay may take some getting used to but the experience is well worth it as there is an excellent story an intense action.

Solid production values and graphics round out a true sleeper hit for the Xbox.

Namco enters the FPS game genre, with interesting...

Strengths: A FPS (First Person Shooter) game with elements of hand-to-hand combat, a great and intriguing storyline as well as superb sound, music and voice acting.

Weakness: Slightly flawed gameplay instances: Picking up items manually, using firearms and sometimes shoddy glitch instances.

To tell the truth, I honestly did not know what to expect from Namco's very first outing in the FPS genre, especially when I heard about the hand-to-hand combat aspect of the game.

Little did I know that I was in for a surprise that was wrapped in a nice little pretty package, but ultimately left a somewhat bad aftertaste in my pallete.

This game is not too bad, but the programmers and scenario writers decided that hand-to-hand combat is what you'll be dealing with about 70% of the time while playing this game.

It's kind of cool when you first play it, but when the action packed areas are scattered out along the levels (sometimes far apart), it gets kind of old, especially since the fisticuffs action gets on the old side.

Sure, you can pick up a few guns here and there, but they're of such limited use, that you're better off sticking to the hand-to-hand combat, even though you're getting bored of it.

Overall, I liked the game, but I didn't like it to the point where I'd definitely be playing it again anytime soon.

Not bad, not great, but somewhere in between.

Perhaps if Namco does a sequel, they'll improve on some of the aspect of the gameplay.

First Person Shenmue

Strengths: Awesome story and characters. Fun gameplay and excellent graphics.

Weakness: No online, multiplayer or co-op. Controls are a little different than most FPS. Difficulty.

Breakdown is a futuristic First Person Shooter similar the The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butchers Bay. Not only do you shoot in this game but, like in Riddick, you can punch people as well. The hand to had combat is really well done in this game and you can pull off some cool combonation moves. The game feels and controls a little different from other FPS. When you are using a gun, you automaticlly aim at the enemies. Also you have to manually pick up items yourself which takes a few seconds. This game is also different because of the bizarre story line. The graphics and sound are really well done in this game. The only drawback is that there is only the single player story mode and nothing else. Also the game can be very challenging at certain points. Breakdown is still a unique game worth checking out on the Xbox.

unique game

Strengths: unique storyline, interesting gameplay

Weakness: a little rough around the edges

Uses the first person view for a more action/adventure type of game. It has a intruiging plot and good story, although some of the game gets a little tedious. I find that with almost all games I play though. All in all, it is a highly underrated game and one worth picking up, especially with the budget price tag it now has.

Good, not great.

Strengths: It's a fun game that aims high...

Weakness: ...but doesn't always reach what it targets.

Everyone's played a million first person shooters, and they're really irrelevant at this point. If I want an FPS, I play Halo. Breakdown is more of a first person beater, stressing hand to hand combat. It's a great idea, but it doesn't always work as well as you might like. Worth it for the budget price, though.

Breakdown Xbox

Strengths: Unique viewpoint, good story and voice acting.

Weakness: Repetitive, sparse levels, graphics are plain, short game, first person view can be quite disorienty and make you dizzy.

Breakdown is basically a sci-fi action game that takes places in a first person persecutive. It's a different because it's not quite a FPS but not quite a true action game either. The developers tried to give you the feeling that you're controlling the game from the character's perspective - the only problem with this mechanic is that you can get very disoriented (and in my case, very dizzy). There's not a lot to do in this game as the levels aren't action packed and are quite sparse - in fact, the graphics are very plain. The game is very repetitive and is quite frustrating when you are attacked my numerous enemies. The story and voice acting on the other hand, is well done and one of the better aspects that will keep you playing despite the flaws.

Breakdown Xbox

Strengths: Story, Fighting, First Person Vomiting

Weakness: Length of Game, Hard in spots, Gunplay

Groundbreaking title which uses First Person View exclusively thoughout the game. The game has kind of a Punch Out quality to it with great first person hand to hand combat. Can get frustrating at time due to the difficult level and ability to interact with your surroundings. Still, for the price (can be found for bargain prices) this is a fresh game with a nice story. Recommended.

Breakdown Xbox

Strengths: Great graphics and story

Weakness: Takes time getting used to 1st person controls

I heard about the game Breakdown, but never gave it a chance. When I saw that the game was on sale, I decided to give it a try. Boy, was I missing out on a great game for the past 2 years. Breakdown is very innovative, but takes some time to get used to. The graphics are top notch, and the story is incredible, and the price cant be beat. If you find this gem, don't pass it up.

Breakdown Xbox

Strengths: Graphics, storyline, and unique gaming experience.

Weakness: Gameplay is slightly broken.

Breakdown is a 1st person action/adventure/driving/fighting/shooter game for XBOX. You play as Derrick Cole a guy who wakes up with no memories in a lab facility. The object of the game is to get rid of the T'lan. T'lan are some superior race with shields that stop bullets. As Derrick you progress through the game getting upgraded as you move along and soon becoming an invincible force against the T'lan. But the gameplay gets in the way. The shooting segments are way too easy and the hand to hand combat is very difficult when there are more than one T'lan in the area that you are fighting. After a while you build a tactic Around the awkward gameplay designs and get to really enjoy the story. The story for the game rocks and it even has to alternate endings that are effected by your actions at a certain part and not some multiple choice question like other games do for multiple endings.

Give the game 5 stars if you like a great story with a unique 1st person experience and 3 stars if you can't handle the difficulty of the game.

Breakdown Xbox

Strengths: Total immersion in first person view, Relatively strong story, Above average grapics.

Weakness: Total immersion in first person view, Hand-to-hand combat system, Short with little reason to replay.

Breakdown is a perfect example of a game that tries to be too innovative and becomes a less enjoyable experience as a result. By placing the player "inside" the protagonists body, Namco (who developed Breakdown) created a feeling of "you are there." This becomes a double-edged sword, as it makes the world seem more real, but what they failed to realize is that games are about abstraction. It is sometimes better for the world to feel less real in the sake of fun. As an example of the drawback to the commitment to a first person view: every time your character picks something up from the ground, your view follows his hand; this means that any time you pick up that gun, ammo or can of soda you lose perspective on where you are in the game world as your whole view goes topsy-turvy. While it can be annoying enough when nothing is going on, it is much more so when you are in the middle of a fight.

One more gripe on the control scheme - it is near impossible to fight hand-to-hand with more than one opponent at a time. This flaw nearly ruins the game near the end.

If you can slog through the annoying choices made by the developer, you will find a surprisingly enjoyable story (just ignore the "I woke up with amnesia and don't know who I am and what I am doing here." first scene), and some pretty good graphics and sound.

Recommended as a rental or if you find it cheap.

Breakdown Xbox

Strengths: Truly unique and challenging gameplay experience, decent graphics, immersive sci-fi storyline, quality voice acting, detailed environments

Weakness: Full-time first-person gameplay takes some getting used to, repetitive combat, limited replay value, may be too difficult for some players

Namco took a tremendous risk when they created this unique sci-fi FPS for Xbox, and they weren't properly rewarded with the sales figures they deserved. Breakdown puts you in the first-person viewpoint for the entire game (cut scenes, driving, fist fights, etc.), so it takes a little getting used to (and can become disorienting when you're fighting multiple enemies at close range).

The full-time first person mode helps to pull you into the already immersive sci-fi storyline. The writers did an excellent job crafting the plot for this adventure, and the quality graphics and sound help to further the draw this title has. The first person grappling rivals the excellent Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.

In the sea of FPS titles on Xbox, Breakdown clearly rises above the rest as a unique gameplay experience in the FPS genre. The fact that it's now available for a budget price makes it all the more easy to justify a purchase.

Breakdown Xbox

Strengths: Great graphics, compelling storyline, great current price ($19.99)!

Weakness: Controls are awkward, repetitive fighting.

This game is an OK buy at the current $19.99 price tag. I would recommend it to those who enjoy FPS games, but who are looking for something slightly different in game style. If you get bored by repetitive gaming, avoid this game. The visuals and effects are great!

Breakdown Xbox

Strengths: Excellent Graphics Good Control

Weakness: Game gets repetitive

Breakdown is a 1st person shooting game from Namco. You play as Derrick when you wake up from a lab with no memory. The object of the game is to save the world from the mutant T'Lan.

The graphics are very detailed with different enemies and backgrounds being vibrant.

The games artificial intelligence is good but after a while you can almost figure out how the computer will react which can make the game repetitive.

After you complete the game, you will probably not want to play through it again as one trip through the game should probably be enough before you get tired of the game.

Overall, if you like 1st person shooters, Breakdown is an ok purchase.

Breakdown Xbox

Strengths: Immersive experience, deep story with twist, 1st person fighter!

Weakness: Difficulty, fighting more than one enemy

Definitely a unique experience, Breakdown puts the player in the role of Derrick Cole who starts the game with a memory loss and must find his purpose in this sci-fi, action-filled story. The entire game is played in a first person view, and everything is done from that viewpoint. Eating, running, jumping, cutscenes, hand to hand combat everything is done from a first person perspective and provide and incredibly immersive experience. The cutscenes are all done in real time, and the player can move around or look around while characters are talking.

Being in first person the whole time has its bad sides as well. The game can get very difficult thanks to the limited view. Fighting more than one enemy can be a real chore, especially when they surround you. The game offers very few moves for multiple enemies, so, many times, the player will be forced to retreat and wait for enemies to come to Derrick. It's definitely worth a try, if you enjoy and immersive experience or a good story.

Strengths: Unique concept of combining FPS and fighting

Breakdown Xbox

Strengths: Graphics, fun game, unique game

Weakness: Hard, Controls, Hard to see past gun

The game can get repitive after a long time because of the fighting aspect, which doesn't change much. The driving was a good addition to the game and the graphcis are pretty good. This is definitely a good game to pick up for a cheap price but it's not a must-have by any means. It's worth at least a rental.

Breakdown Xbox

Strengths: Good graphics and vivid colors, Cool effects, Non-typical first person interaction animations, the vomiting is very funny!

Weakness: Controls are hard to use and the PFS perspective makes it hard to fight the enemies. Story is too simple and cliche

After playing this game for a while, it started to get repetitive for me. The fighting was mostly the same, I did find the driving in the game fun but the pacing of the game on the whole, did not change much. The animations for other characters are limited, no facial expression at all! I found the overall art direction good, and the graphics are clean. Probably the best element is the extra animation of Col's arms and actions, but that gets old fairly quickly. Overall an average action type game, but not memorable.

Breakdown Xbox

Strengths: Unique feel to first person perspective puts you in the game. Combat is up close and personal. Nice Sci-Fi story.

Weakness: Fights can get awkward and chaotic.

Namco brings an original Sci-Fi action/shooter to the Xbox. The unique feel to the game makes the experience so much more personal. You not only play the character, but you feel what he feels and see what he sees, without relying on any third-party perspective. Sometimes it feels isolated, but it adds a lot to the story and atmosphere of the game.

The controls work well enough, but at times you can get lost when fighting a group of enemies or losing your orientation when looking around. This game shines when your fist to fist with the bad guys. It adds a personal edge to the game that keeps you drawn into the story.

First person shooters on the Xbox are a dime a dozen. It's nice to see a company take the time to make their game stand out with unique features and a carefully crafted story to round out the experience.

Strengths: The game has great graphics and effects.

Weakness: The game-play is not very innovative, and is very simple.

Breakdown is a weird, and on occasion a wonderful twist on the heavily saturated first-person shooter genre.
