Hitman 2: Silent Assassin GameCube

Strengths: Large, opened levels. Good music.

Weakness: AI is inconsistent, character control for stealth is awkward.

This is a terrible $50 game, but as the price has dropped nearer to rent levels, it becomes more easy to recommend picking up. The levels are large and you can simply walk around shooting guards/civilians if you so desire, all to a fairly decent soundtrack. When the time comes to achieve the actual goals, there are usually 3-4 unique approaches to win. Unfortunately, this tends to become experiment/death/retry in order to discover who you are actually supposed to kill or which path will literally be a dead end as the level briefing can be vague. Also, sometimes simply going in guns blazing will work, which is frustrating when you spend so much time trying to nail a stealth tactic unsuccessfully.
I found it odd that when you try to approach someone for a silent kill, your character appears to be convulsing, he shakes around so terribly. It also takes a while to get the hang of strangling someone to death as guards tend to be wonderfully perceptive when about to be snuckup upon And yet if you fire round after round into a wall next to them, sometimes they just do not react. This inconsistency means that the devices of wearing guards outfits, moving bodies, or other stealth tactics work sometimes, are too strict at others and still at some points seem to matter not at all. Add in that guards sometimes instinctively know when you will appear even if you make no sound and are out of sight, and you think the guards have a huge advantage. But no! For whatever reason you can survive more gunshot wounds than Darkman and keep chugging along. Machine failure will more often result in botching the target kill than your own inept ability to remain alive. This game could have been great, but I guess not enough Cube owners were much enthused since the sequel remained on other platforms.

Hitman 2

Strengths: Sense of immersion, open ended play

Weakness: The occasional graphic glitch or AI flaw.

Hitman 2 is what I would call an underrated title. Too bad it is published by arguably the most inept publisher in gaming, Eidos. They have managed put a top notch development team in place, and Hitman 2 is a great result and it received little fanfare.
The game is about a reformed assassin who has changed his ways and now works in a monastery, helping out with various odd jobs. In short, some baddies come and murder the religious leader of the monastery and our nameless Hitman must avenge the death. He can only do this by reentering the world of intrigue and death, taking on contracts in order to get close to his quarry.
The game unfolds at a very nice pace, as you are hired to do more tense and complicated hits, often with other orders like intelligence gathering. The game is also not for the squeamish or children, as the title suggests. You are a paid assassin and all that entails is here. The game more or less consists of receiving your target and a dossier, then you decide how you want to do it. Therein lies the greatness of this game. You can be stealthy, being a clandestine agent incognito, taking time and sneaking up on your prey, finally strangling him to death. Or you can load up like a human arsenal and go in guns blazing mowing down innocent and being conspicuous. The game does reward you for being more professional as your skills do affect what happens in the game. Collateral damage is bad for business, after all.
Graphics are pretty good. There is the occasional graphic glitch and the game is very dark. The game also looks like a pc game. But on the whole the graphics are pretty good and they do a good job of realizing the European setting, and making the world alive and immersive. The Sound is also pretty good, and very much a part of the game. Sneaking around and eavesdropping is important. Control could be better, but on the whole it is responsive and allows for a variety of actions.
Hitman 2 should be applauded for its open ended gameplay. By doing this it makes the game more immersive, giving the player options instead of a trail to follow. The graphics and sound add to this, but this would be a fun game even if it had poor sound and visuals. This game is definitely worth a look.

Hitman 2 Silent Assassin

One of the problems with many games today is their lack of imagination. In order to complete a level you usually have to go from point A to point B and do exactly what the developer planned for you to do. Get stuck? Simply consult a strategy guide. Don't bother getting creative because thinking outside the box never works. After all, if the developer didn't plan for it, you can't do it.
