I have the ps3 version which is great and lots of fun. I got the PS2 version for my nephew and spent some time with it. The graphics look worse than the original Mercenaries which is very weird. The missions are setup differently from the PS3 version and actually ruin the game for me. There are times where you just stay in one spot and constantly shoot enemies upon enemies. The game is still fun as you can go out to steal cars and blow stuff up.
Strengths: You can roam around & blow up the interactive game world. Imaginative weapons & equipment like tanks, trucks, etc. Free to attack & go after anyone's contract. I like the laser guided air strikes.
Weakness: Violence is not as graphic as Grand Theft Auto but there are more explosions. There is too much storytelling, but you can skip this although it is difficult to figure out the missions if you skip it.
I thouroughly enjoy playing this game. You can choose which factions you wish to represent. There are a multitude of weapons (rifles, missile launchers, pistols & grenades), tanks, jeeps, helicopters, semi trucks, cars and other equipment all around you to use to destroy everything in this game. The entire game world can be blown up. It is fairly easy to learn the controls. The graphics are very crisp and the game views are outstanding. You can swim this time also. I have been playing this game for hours at a time since I have purchased it. The game world is very interactive just like Grand Theft Auto only you are in a Venezuelan Jungle and different cities. There are 3 characters to choose from - Jen, Mattias, and Chris. I have been playing with Chris and he means business. If the client doesn't pay you make him pay one way or the other. The missions are really cool and there even side jobs that you can complete for the Allied Nations for some extra coin. You can bribe people or go after other faction's enemies to win the trust of other factions to get more work. The bottom line is this game rocks. If you want to blow up and destroy whatever gets in your way, then this is the game for you. You can even go after whoever you want. It is one of the best games for PS2, and the most fun I have had playing since Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Enjoy...
