Exceptional Kung-Fu

Strengths: GREAT FPS, fantastic controls, good adrenaline-pumping music, graphics, awesome sword-play, MULTIPLAYER!!!, auto-health regeneration (no med kits)

Weakness: Sniping

Red Steel is one of the greatest games I have ever played... and I've played them all! The controls are simply amazing, using the Wiimote to aim at bad guys and to engage in sword fights. The weapon selection is kind of diverse in the fact that you have a few pistols, a few shotguns, and a few automatics. But after finding a gun that suits one's personal taste, it's perfect. Sword-play in the game happens quite often and was designed very well. Not every movement is detected by the sensor bar which makes it rather frustrating when you start getting chopped into but, once you get a feel for the controls, it's great! Background music is good in the fact that it's mild inbetween action and picks up at any sign of danger to add a movie-like effect. The graphics are better than what I expected. They are just a step above those of the graphics in "007: Nightfire". The only thing that killed some of the fun in the game is when you'd see a sniper leaning against a railing in a large, open area and you'd have to pick off enemies that are packing serious heat. Don't get me wrong, that doesn't kill the game play completely, but after defeating a boss in an awesome duel, getting mowed down by a couple of snipers isn't the most humbling experience. In the end, this game is the most fantastic thing I've seen in a long time. The replay-value is good in the fact that blasting away bad guys never gets old, but sword fighting seems easier after chopping down dozens of foes with the katana.

Pleasantly Surprised

Strengths: Easy to learn controls, fun, imaginative environments, lots of weapons,

Weakness: voice acting is weak at times, main menu layout is confusing, close quarters combat is difficult to control

This game needs a tutorial. They kind of just throw you right into the action, and that is what is so annoying about the first few levels. You haven't mastered the controls yet. As you progress however, you begin to appreciate Ubisofts efforts alot more. The cutscenes, instead of being full motion animation, for the most part are set up like storyboards, like in Max Payne. It lays the story out really well, and adds to the noir feel of the game. I loved the array of weapons. I found myself using the .45 ACP alot. You point the Wiimote and pull the trigger. With every muzzle blast, you get a satisfying rumble in the controller, and badguys are dropping like flys. The environments are destructable so don't think you are going to hide behind curtains, or wooden crates. The fire, and light effects are downright amazing. Trucks explode, pipes burst, barrels ignite, and they all go BOOM! In the end this game delivers alot of fun. If you give yourself 30 minutes or so to master the controls, there's alot of fun to be had here. The swordplay, in my opinion, is kind of a weak point. You expect the sword to move as you move but it doesn't. You swing the wiimote, the sword swings. Repeat, over and over and over again. Kind of like, mashing a button on a regular controller. I can only hope this aspect of the Wii get's better. Even still, it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the game. A really solid offering from Ubisoft.

Not exactly what I expected ....

Strengths: Reasonable Price. Decent Storyline.

Weakness: Using Wiimote to control is very Difficult.

When I first played Red Steel, I was very frustrated. It begin what seemed like an great storyline, however once Game involved using Guns and Swords, I began to dislike the game. By using Wiimote and nunchuck to control the game, it was very difficult, I was unable to move and aim things the way I wanted to and It took me a while to get used to the game. However I am still not comfortable with the controls and I wouldn't really recommend this game to anyone.

A Great First Generation Title for the Wii!

Strengths: Interesting concept. A great first try at the FPS genre for the Wii!

Weakness: Controls can be frustrating and not as responsive as I'd like.

When I first read the previews and saw the footage from Red Steel, I was super excited. This was one of *THE* games to pick up for the Nintendo Wii's launch. The game was going to re-invent the FPS genre--- or so we thought.

The game is out and, while it may not reinvent the genre, it's a nice step forward in seeing just what we can do with the Nintendo Wii. The game's story is a nice kung fu western.

The issues with the game are not with the story or the graphics, but rather... the inventive controls that should be the biggest selling point. Using the Wii-mote and the nunchuck is not as second nature as one would expect. Many times, you'll find yourself needing a quick reaction only to find your character on the wrong end of the sword.

Red Steel tries to do a lot with the Wii mote. It succeeds to a point, but the success is not overwhelming. Maybe the sequel will clean up the rough edges of this diamond.

Not So Red Steel

Strengths: Graphics are nice. Fun game with decent multiplayer.

Weakness: Brought down by somewhat poor controls, bland story, and blah sword fighting.

OK first attempt by Ubisoft at FPS controls, but there's definitely room for improvement. Sword fighting is really lacking. You can't pull the swords out at anytime, only during key events. Plus you can't control you character's movements during sword fights, only swinging and blocking. Despite that Red Steel is still an alright game, and it has fun multiplayer.

okay start

Strengths: fps, swordfighting

Weakness: controls, camera movement, multiplayer mode

This game despite the control problem, this game is actually fun! The ability to move your hand sideway and it actually being displayed on the screen is pretty unique. Having the environment being interactive was good, being able to shoot anyone and everything. Also having a sword as a weapon was refreshing and new. The AI was okay, and brought some difficulty to the game. Being the first fps for the wii, there was bound to be some problems. The game lacked in the control department such as no 1:1 in swordfighting and aiming your gun. The ability to strafe was also difficult. The story and plot scenes was pretty lame with stills, wish it was fmv. The script could also use some work.

The multiplayer option is okay, but they are pretty dull, especially the beeper mode. It just doesnt work when you are in playing in the same room as your opponents, maybe if it was online it could have worked.

First Wii shooter

Strengths: Great look at what the future of FPS can be on the Wii. Swordplay is great!

Weakness: Some graphical glitches can be annoying; speed of the game is somewhat lacking. Low production values

There is a wide split in opinions of Red Steel. Some think it was a great first FPS on the Wii (I happen to be in this group) while others think it was a horrible experience in all ways.

While far from perfect, the implementation of FPS controls with the Wii remote were a good start and a great look at what we can see in the future (probably with Metroid Prime). The sword fighting, while not 1:1 motion controlled was a lot of fun and broke up the usual gunfights.

Red Steel had moments of beauty, and other times when doors would poke through walls. Given more time for polishing, it could have been something great. Here's looking forward to the sequel.

Great Game

Strengths: Non stop action

Weakness: - Hard to die - Fairly easy to completing the levels - You can only save at the end of each level

Red Steel is one of the better games for the Wii. It is a great first person shooting game and makes good use of the Wii remote. It is hard to die in this game because if your health is low, all you need to do is hide behind something and your health recovers quickly. There are check points through out each level, but you can't restart from the checkpoint after you exit the game. Some levels take around 20+ minutes to complete.

Red Steel Is a Winner!

Strengths: good first person shooter, innovative controls, use of Wii remote & nunchuck

Weakness: learning curve of using Wii remote & nunchuck

Despite what you might have heard regarding Red Steel, there is a very entertaining game here. The controls can be somewhat hard to get used to, especially if you're never played a game where you are relying entirely on your motions. I would suggest that you get used to the Wii controls before delving right into Red Steel. The storyline is entertaining and will get your adrenaline pumping. Some of the voice acting is not the best, but you can bet that you will have a fun time working your way through this FPS trying to save your girlfriend from her captors.

Awesome game!

Strengths: Next generation FPS controls, awesome storyline, cool graphics

Weakness: small glitches here and there

this game was a lot better than I had expected. The new aiming and sword fighting technology really put you into the action. The terrain and surroundings are beautifully detailed. The storyline keeps you on edge. Once I first started playing, I couldn't put the Wii-mote down until I was done! My only problem with this is that you'll have an occasional glitch, such as: sensor bar goes haywire while aiming; occasional sword malfunctions; some enemies start levitating after killed. Other than these minor occasional glitches, I would have to say this game is definitely worth the money.

A fun game for the Wii!

Strengths: Innovative controls for console FPS

I enjoyed this game. I have mainly played First Person Shooters on the PC, using the mouse and keyboard. The Wiimote here functions like the mouse, used to look/aim, while the nunchuck moves the character through the environment like the keyboard. It works well, and brings something new to console shooters.
In addition to wielding various gun through out the course of the game, you are also given the opportunity to duel using your katana and tanto. This is a nice addition to the genre which I had not played with before.
The story line starts you off in the middle of the action, and keeps building from there. As its price begins to drop after the launch window, I would definitely recommend picking this up.

Fun game, but could be better

Strengths: Innovative controls Graphics Story

Weakness: Steep learning curve on controls

Overall, this is a very fun game because it is so different and more realistic. Rather than just using a joystick to aim, you actually use your controller like you would use a gun. This is a strength, but also a weakness, as it takes quite a while to get used to the new way of playing a game.

Definitely worth it.

Red Steel

Red Steel came as quite a surprise when it was unveiled earlier this year. Ubisoft, a developer known for multi-platform releases, announced the game as a Nintendo Wii exclusive. This was the first title with official screens, and the first with information on what could be an FPS that would change (or at least influence) the course of the genre. The potential innovation came from its promised...

Red Steel

Before it came out, many proclaimed that Red Steel would surely become the ultimate showcase for the Wii Remote’s motion-sensing technology: an FPS with a dash of swordplay, a combination of two activities that the Wii Remote could make far more lifelike and accurate than any other controller! And then it was released.
