Magic and monsters

Strengths: Great story, good gameplay, wifi, unique

Weakness: None

An amazing and unique game, genius use of touch screen and large variety of spells and leveling up. A game definantly worth buying. Ide recomend it to anyone with a ds especialy if they had wifi, I've been playing it for 2 months and I'm still not bored of it and I still have many more spells to unlock. :D

Goes with the game

Strengths: Need to draw the ruins to cast the spells

Weakness: none

Have played it for 18 hours and I am not bored at all. I still haven't finished the game. There are 400 spells and I have only completed about 60 of the spells. My favorite spell is the fire wind ruin because it shoots a big wind disc and damages all the enemies in the area that the disc goes through.

Lost Magic

Strengths: tons of magic, online wifi

Weakness: poor use of stylus

Lost Magic is a RST from Ubi. The game uses the stylus for magic. While there are tons of magic, the decision to use stylus makes it hard to control. The use of wifi means that the game will have good replay value.

All is not lost

Strengths: Use of Stylus to cast spells, Good storyline, Decent RPG elements

Weakness: Graphics, Repetitive gameplay, Frustrating at times

This game comes across as a lite version of hardcore RPG games. Combat system isn't impressive either but the way you cast spells using stylus is interesting.
Story revolves around a young boy & his adventures but the levels get repetitive when you find yourself doing same stuff all over again. Boss battles can be frustrating but satisfying at the same time. Online 1 on 1 is a highlight of this game. There are multiple endings but that apart there is not much replayblity here.
Music is surprisingly good but graphics shows lot of room for improvement. They don't look as good as most ds games.
All in all if you like handheld RPG games & find this one for a bargain price - go for it.

Lost Magic

Strengths: Deep list of spells, solid gameplay

Weakness: Bad AI, stylus control is difficult

This title is more of a real time strategy game vs. a traditional FF style RPG which is what I sort of expected from Lost Magic. There a bunch of things that make this title cumbersome as noted in the weaknesses above.

Although the use of the stylus for spell casting might be a good idea, for some reason, the recognition of the symbols you need to draw tends to be flaky. This is especially evident when you try to use different combos of symbols to cast different and more powerful spells….or it could be that my drawing abilities are bad. Anyhow, it’s compounded by the fact that the battles tend to be real time, so if you have to try to draw a particular symbol and your DS doesn’t acknowledge your symbols, you’re a step behind.

Another potential nice feature, collecting monsters, is a mixed bag. It’s cool to have a collecting feature (ala Pokemon, Dragon Quest Heroes), but using the monsters is tricky. The movement of the monsters is pretty spotty as they tend not to walk around walls or corners. They’ll get stopped trying to move “as the crow” flies and that makes them somewhat limited in their use. Problem is that you will need them to get through some levels/dungeons.

Somewhat intreguing DS game

Strengths: Real-Time Tactics with stylus control, spell casting system, challenge.

Weakness: Enemy types, slightly lame levels.

LostMagic is a Tactics game that utilizes the stylus to give your characters ultimate control. The main character, Issac, casts numerous types of spells against the enemies he encounters. Players do this by drawing up to three runes on the touch screen with the more powerful spells taking longer to cast.

Issac can also charm monsters to fight on his side. They will usually do most of the front-line fighting and protect Issac. Unfortunately, their AI is weak since they cannot go around corners.

While the enemies challenge players, not to mention the levels with their time limits, only a few of them make you actually think about how to face them. These are the bosses that actually use magic against you and your party.

The levels are actually somewhat interesting, although a few don't really add much to the game. Many of them force
you to place your allies on generators to keep them from spawning. Other levels have things like conveyor sands, magma, poison gas, and other things to damage you and your allies.

All and all, LostMagic is a decent attempt to bring an RTT game to the DS. It's worth a purchase if you can find it cheap or can rent it, but stay away from it otherwise.

6/10

A decent game that could've used more time in...

Strengths: Initially fun design, WiFi support

Weakness: Poor game AI, poor stylus implementation

This game is a real time strategy game, a genre that is mostly popular on PC, but if done right, could be really fun on the DS. The problem with this game is that unit AI is seriously flawed. If you tell a unit to go from point A to point B, it will try to walk through walls, getting itself stuck. There are other poor AI choices that force you to micromanage units which can be frustrating and makes the game needlessly difficult. Additionally, "drawing" spells is an integral part of the game, but the recognition system for it is extremely poor.

Still, there is WiFi support and the game is pretty funny, when it works. Just don't expect StarCraft and you might come out okay.

Lost Magic

Strengths: Innovative real-time strategy game for the DS, with tons of depth.

Weakness: Touchscreen control a bit flaky, AI not so good. Game can get very difficult.

Lost Magic is a real-time strategy adventure game. You move from battle to battle across a world map and control an army of monsters (that you catpure in battle) to achieve various mission objectives. You also control the main character directly and use the stylus to draw a wide array of spells. The control on the spellcasting can be pretty touchy and you won't want to approach this title unless you have good stylus control. You also control the elements of your army by circling them and directing them to different locations. This can be difficult too, especially as all the battling is real-time. The AI of your units is pretty bad as well - they will stop at obstacles and continue to walk even when being attacked (not fighting back).

However, if you can get past the control flaws and bad AI, the game is very engaging and deep. The enemy capture element keeps the game interesting and the battles are well-designed. There is also an online multiplayer combat element that lets you level up the characters from your single-player game - a nice touch indeed (especially as the single-player game is so difficult).

LostMagic Review

Strengths: Tons of spells. Multiple endings. Nintendo Wi-Fi gameplay.

Weakness: Extremely difficult and frustrating at times. Gameplay is somewhat short and repetitive. Bland graphics for a DS game.

It's clear to me that the developers put all of their attention on the idea of casting lots of different spells using by drawing runes on the touch screen. In that respect it does succeed, but they could've done a lot more to improve the presentation and flow of this game. Capturing monsters and using them in battle is a neat idea, but controlling them can be frustrating because all you can really do is highlight them and tell them where to go and who to attack. The pathing is terrible, and you can't tell them to stop attacking. This game is difficult and cheap at times, and when the final boss is beaten there's nothing really to keep you from playing again.

Land of the Lost

Strengths: Nice collection and magic system. Engaging. gets better as you play.

Weakness: The story is meh. Systems are good but could be better.

KLost Magic is one of the first DS roleplaying games and it's okay. The story is meh but the focus on spells, strategy, and monster collection is good. If anything, the problem is it's not fleshed out enough. The rune drawing is nice, but remembering the different spells and tryign to do multiple things at once can be a challenge. It would have been ebtter if it hd been more streamlined. But overall it's a good DS title.

Magic and Monsters!

Strengths: -Fun Rune system -Build an army of monsters

Weakness: -Time limit on levels is frustating -Hard to keep your team alive and cast runes

This is a RTS game for the DS. You play as a young magic user. Levels consist of short battles where you freely move about and fight the enemy. You can cast magic spells by drawing runes on your touch screen. You can also capture monsters to add to your army. The battles are timed, and I often found myself wishing I had more time for my tactics. You can also go online and battle other people's characters.

First Wi-Fi RPG

Strengths: Decent battle system, online competitive play

Weakness: No online co-op, some gameplay annoyances

Lost Magic was highly anticipated to be the first good RPG on the DS, following in the footsteps of such disappointments as Lunar Dragon Song and Tao's Adventure. While it surpassed those titles in the genre, it still left things to be desired.

The Wi-Fi capabilities were a welcome addition, but they were limited to competitive play using monsters you have each gained during the course of the single player campaign. We are still waiting for a cooperative Wi-Fi game to hit the handheld.

Other than some gameplay irritations like physics/AI issues with the monsters in your party being stuck behind obstacles when they shouldn't be, Lost Magic had its moments. It just could have been so much more.

RPG gaming

Strengths: Innovative magic interface and simple controls

Weakness: Dated graphics, bland story

I was excited about getting this RPG for my DS. Using the touch pad to cast magic spells is innovative and the controls are easy to use. I am disappointed in the bland graphics as I feel there could have been allot more detail, the graphics feel like a GBA game at best. I also found the on line gameplay to be difficult, however off line it is much better.

An average RPG at best.
