Weakness: Poor communication online. Poor control scheme.
Resident evil Outbreak contains five mini scenarios that take place in Racoon City, where the undead have come back to life. In each scenario you can play one of eight characters. Each one with his or her own special ability. alternatively, you can play online with up to four friends.
The multiple characters give some replay power. That way you can examine each ones strengths and weaknesses in different scenarios. Ideally though I think the designers intended for players to work in teams and use the different strengths of their characters together. However, it's difficult to work together since players can only communicate through some basic commands like "help me!" You'll probably hear that one a lot with no voice or keyboard chat.
The game follows a lot of the conventions you've come to expect from the RE series. Including some difficulties in controlling the characters at time. Also, the game doesn't pause while your in inventory. It's annoying to be looking through your backpack while a zombie starts chomping on you.
Overall it's a good game, but I don't see myself playing it online much and once I finish trying some of the other characters it'll be trade in bait.

Weakness: Loading times, short, poorly implemented communication system.
The idea of a Resident Evil online game had been floating around for quite a while and the possibilities seemed limitless. I think Capcom did an adequate job for their first go round into the online realm with Outbreak. The game can be incredibly fun and addictive (I'm speaking of the online aspect) as you band together with other real life counterparts and try to survive. It all depends on who you play with. Since I was new at this game, I often found myself being abandoned by other advanced players who have already played this game for the umpteenth time. To compound matters, the communication is so poor in this game. It basically consists of you flicking the right analog stick for about 7 different generic responses. The loading times are terrible in this game. Anytime you walk through a door or into a room, there's about a 10-second load time. This just ruins the suspense of a game that's suppose to be about horror and thrills. The PS2 hard-drive can dramatically cut down the load times (to about 3-seconds). However, if other players in the servers don't have the HDD, you'll have to play without it and go back to the 10-second load times. Basically you have to find players who own the HDD, which are far and few in between. Sony has never really supported the HDD (in fact it has all but abandoned it since the new PS2 Slim doesn't even support it) so good luck finding anyone with it (except for the occasional FFXI fans). This game has been out for a while and most of the rooms on the server are empty. I see maybe 50-100 at most right now so I wouldn't be surprised if Capcom pulled the plug on this game soon. If you can find this game for cheap (like I did), go ahead and buy it. It's worth playing through at least one time.

This is BAD. This *IS* as bad as everyone says it is. This game is humiliating to a great series like Resident Evil. The gameplay is awful, the camera angles are disgusting. How can you play if all you can see are walls?
DO NOT BUY.

Weakness: Terrible load times, NO VOICE COMMUNICATION.
The idea of playing Resident Evil online is a great one, isn't it? Well, unfortunately, Capcom didn't do it as well as they could've. The load times are amazingly awful, and communication between players is limited to a few canned phrases (Come here! I need help! etc.). You can't use a USB microphone, or even type. This makes communication an exercise in frustration, and may make you ask yourself why you're playing online at all.
Gameplay is just like the old PS1 RE games. If you're looking for something at the level of RE4, or even Code Veronica, I'm sorry. And so is this game.

Resident Evil Outbreak was alright. Definetaly not as good as the the other RE titles available. Outbreak is relatively short with only 5 levels. It has very long loading times if you don't have the harddrive. There's alot of stuff that can be unlocked both on and offline.
Strengths: Online capability for the Resident Evil world - Graphics are decent
Weakness: Online environment needs to be improved on
Finally, Resident Evil multiplayer! Ever since getting my slim PS2 with built in network adapter, I've been looking for a good game to try it out with. When I saw Resident Evil Outbreak, i saw my chance.
Im a big RE fan, owning almost every RE title there is - minus ones like Dead Aim, etc.
This game pretty much inherits the typical RE gameplay, just with multiplayer components.
There are a few things to be improved upon, however. Communication within groups is hard online, and can get you killed.
Also, not something that can be improved because of reality - but from playing previous RE games, you are used to looking in inventory to grab a herb to heal yourself, or change weapons, and here you are still 'in game' and can be attacked. This obviously cannot be changed because of a real time online game, BUT for old school RE players it may be weird at first.
At time of this review, I know that there is a RE:Outbreak File 2 game, which tries to improve some of this games problems, but this game is worth giving a shot to as well.
Strengths: COOL GRAPHIC! Fun gameplay for about 10 Mins!
Weakness: Adds nothing to the Resident Evil Storyline! Gameplay get tiring after an hours.
Resident Evil: Outbreak 2...
Can't believe Capcom would make a sequel to this game...
Outbreak is terrible... addign nothing to the Resident Evil Story... This game is just a way for Capcom to milk the series for all it's worth.
Pros: Graphic is Good! Can be had for $20... anywhere..
Cons: Crap gameply... this game gets old... very fast...
Strengths: A new Resident Evil game for PS2, excellent FMV cinemas, unique online multiplayer mode, plenty of replay value, tons of unlockables, short load times with HDD peripheral
Weakness: Average graphics and sound, mediocre AI characters, short overall length, requires network adapter for online play, long load times without HDD peripheral, no headset support
Resident Evil: Outbreak presented any number of opportunities for Capcom's flagship series. With the main RE series tied up exclusively with Gamecube for several years, PS2 owners had to make due with mere side stories like Dead Aim. However, Outbreak could still have been something special.
Outbreak puts you through five separate episodes (roughly an hour each) and lets you choose between eight characters (male and female). Each has their own minor story variations and unlockables, which gives this relatively short game some level of replay.
What really separates Outbreak from other RE games is the online multiplayer mode. Now you can team up with up to three other players to complete each episode online. Unfortunately, Capcom missed a big opportunity here by failing to include headset support, so you can only communicate with other players using a handful of virtually useless prescripted phrases.
Veteran PSone RE fans will like Outbreak despite its apparent flaws, but anyone looking for innovative game play here will probably be disappointed. If you have any doubts at all, rent it first. You definitely don't want to pay more than $20 new for this title even if you're a series fan.
Weakness: Horrible load times, no voice chat, no keyboard chat, buggy gameplay.
Here is the bane of the RE series. Horrible, horrible load times--even if you use the Harddrive, the load times in RE: outbreak are among the worst of this entire generation. But even that would be acceptable if the gameplay hadn't firmly settled in the land of Awful. The game is designed around online play... but you can neither chat nor type while playing online. This means that you cannot communicate with your teammates online, outside of a dozen pre-set commands... it makes the game a simply miserable experience. Stick with the Resident Evil remake on the GameCube, or, even better, the incredible Resident Evil 4.
Strengths: Online Play, Lots of different characters to play as
Weakness: Slow load times
Resident Evil: Outbreak is the first Resident Evil game with the feature to play multiplayer with other gamers online. You can choose your character you play as from a cast of 8 characters that each have different abilities for example one character can hold more items while another can pick locks. Resident Evil: Outbreak doesn't have a very strong back story to it but what is there of the story will be different depending on who your playing as adding some replay to the game. One thing that will stick out to anyone who has played Resident Evil before is the load times can be bad for example when you go to pick up an item although this can be remedied if you happen to have a hard drive in your PS2 you can put Resident Evil: Outbreak on it and the loads times will be better. I would say that the idea behind Resident Evil: Outbreak is great but the execution could have been better so I would highly suggest renting Resident Evil: Outbreak before buying it to see how you like it.
First off, what's bad is the communication. I mean, why does this game not support the USB headset for PS2? It's just screaming to be included. However with that said, the rest of the game, from graphics to sound to concept and gameplay is great. You get a real sense of teamwork since you rely on three other characters to survive and beat the game. Each person only has 4 items slots, and a weapon or ammo takes up one, as does any healing or key items.
If only the game supported chat it would be perfect.

Anyone out there see the recent movie Dawn of the Dead? As I sat in the movie theatre I actually remember thinking how cool an online multiplayer game would be if it involved a city full of zombies coming after a group of harried survivors. Then my thoughts shifted to the new Resident Evil game which I had begged to get for review. Would it be as cool as I had imagined? Would there be a real feel...
Let's start out by saying that I'm a big fan of Capcom's Resident Evil series. I'm an even bigger fan of Silent Hill and Fatal Frame, so you could say that I'm a survival horror junkie. So imagine my excitement when I learned that Resident Evil Outbreak would be taking classic RE atmosphere and gameplay online. What twisted, insane kind of plan had Capcom concocted? How could what is ostensibly a...
While purists love to cite I*Motion's classic Alone in the Dark series as the father of the survival horror category, it was Capcom's Resident Evil franchise that truly pushed the genre forward. Combining a stylized mix of spooky camera perspectives and a slew of horrid-looking things that go bump in the night, Biohazard has set new standards in the in the realm of digital terror -- even if its...
