Weakness: Repetetively hacking and slashing monsters
In the special edition you are able to play story mode with "Vigil".You can see his side of the story. His weapons are "Yamato", "Beowulf", "Force Edge" and "Summoned Swords". Different from Dante Virgil only has one Style "Dark Slayer" and Virgil starts with his weapons. There are extra modes available like "Bloody Palace" were you go through a dungeon, Your goal is to make a way killing enemies after enemies and going from level to level. In Bloody Palace mode you have 9999 levels, When you finish a level (that is when you kill all monsters) you have a choice from a "Fire Portal", "Lightning Portal" and a "Water Portal". The Fire portal moves you up 100 levels, the Lightning Portal moves you up 10 levels and the Water Portal moves you up 1. When you start a game you have a choice between "Gold" and "Yellow". Gold mode is when you die you do not have to use a "Gold Orb" to revive, and when you revive you restart from the point you died. Yellow mode is normal mode were you need a "Gold Orb" to revive and when you revive you restart at the last checkpoint you passed and not were you died. You also have an option called "Demo Digest" were you can replay any cinematics you have recently seen. In this version you have an additional difficultly : Very Hard, so now you have Easy, Normal, Hard, "Very Hard" and DMD (Dante Must Die). You also have many more unlockable features in the game.

Strengths: many unlockable bonus features, great gameplay
Weakness: none
“Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition” is a hack and slash game of for the PS/2. If you played the previous two Devil May Cry games, you'll be familiar with the game play for the third edition. What makes this version a better choice than the original Devil May Cry 3 is the ability to play as Dante’s brother Virgil, who has a lightning fast moves and many deadly attacks. Unlike Dante, he doesn't have any guns but instead uses and conjures up mystical flying swords that he can throw at his enemies. He also uses a Japanese katana instead of Dante's broadsword. It's really fun to play as Virgil which is unlocked if you complete the game or if your memory card has a previously saved game of the original Devil May Cry-3. Another big improvement over the original is the lowered difficulty; this game is not as frustratingly and controller throwing hard. You can set an easier difficulty setting and one even easier, just die a few times to unlock an even easier mode). Also, the continue system has been improved greatly, in that you no longer have to purchase expensive yellow orbs in order to continue. Instead you can continue on from the last checkpoint where you died unlimited times. Also if you have a gold orb in your inventory, you can resurrect and use your next life which allows you more than one life to fight against the game’s many tough bosses. I highly recommend getting this game.

Weakness: You'll want to punch Dante in the face before the title screen.
Is there anything worse than a young, arrogant guy with a penchant for wearing tight pants and who routinely shrugs off a dozen scythes driven through his torso? Thankfully, Devil May Cry 3 provides a non-stop action-packed ride that'll have you on the edge of your seat. (How's that for cliches?) That is, if you can look past the annoying protagonist and the harder difficulty compared to the rest of the series. Dark and brooding this young Dante is not, but don't let that stop you from enjoying an otherwise solid game.
The Special Edition allows you to play as Vergil, as well as other small features that you'd hardly notice unless you were a big DMC fan.
Strengths: Improved load times, fixed glitch problems, lots of extras.
Weakness: $20 what more can you ask for.
Devil May Cry 3 special edition. Its one of those games you can thank Capcom. 1) For being a greatest hit title 2) For adding extras, and improving the game itself. If you already have the original this is still worth considering to pick up, because of upgraded difficulty levels new bosses, new modes and you can play as a new character "Dante's Brother." After completing the original and the special edition. SE felt more complete and satisfied for this amazing series.
Strengths: New playable character, solid combat system, lower difficulty levels, various new extras, budget asking price
Weakness: Vergil's story lacks context, mostly cheap extras, red stripe on case/disc
It doesn't happen often, but every once in a while a publisher will release a greatest hits version of a popular title with new content for fans. This is almost always a good thing and can help to ensure that series fans will at least rent (if not buy) a copy to see what's new.
Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening - Special Edition ups the ante with a new playable character (Vergil), a more lenient continue system, lower difficulty at all play levels, one new boss battle (Jester), a new survival mode and character costumes. Some of the extras simply feel tacked on though. Vergil simply replaces Dante in his campaign, fighting the same enemies and bosses with no cutscene explanations.
If you're a fan of the series, it should go without saying that you'll want to own this version (as well as the original), but the budget retail prices makes this somewhat more affordable. It's still a tough action game in places, so players new to the series may want to think twice. Given a choice, new players should opt for the special edition over the more brutally difficult original.
Strengths: Ability to switch weapons in real time, action, gameplay.
Weakness: Not much
If you enjoyed the previous Devil May Cry's, then you'll love this. It improves on everything the past games had. Also, there's easier modes for those find the game too hard. The store is decent, especially for an action game and replayability is moderate-high.
Strengths: Even more features added to an already great game
Weakness: N/A
Instead of releasing a Greatest Hits version of Devil May Cry 3 with just the typical ugly Greatest Hits cover but exactly the same game under the hood, Capcom went the extra mile and released a version with a bunch of added content. We have a new character, Vergil. A few extra scenes have been added as well. There are also a few modes and secrets thrown in. The difficulty has been toned down a bit and the ability to save made easier (which may be to the dismay of hardcore fans but I appreciated it). The game still holds up graphically even in this day of HD gaming systems and at $20 this game is a definite buy for any fan of action games.
Weakness: Virgil Has To Be Unlocked, Camera Issues
Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition is a remake of the regular DMC3 with extras added in for the Greatest Hits Edition. The biggest thing added in is that you can also play though DMC 3 as Dante's brother Virgil who is the main bad guy as you play though the game as Dante, the biggest hinder is that you will have to beat the game with Dante first and won't be able to play as Virgil right out of the gate but if you happen to have a save file from the regular Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening you can use that to unlock him from the get go. Capcom also added in a mode called the Bloody Palace arena mode which is simply put a survival mode.
I would highly recommend Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition to fans of action games as it is easily one of the best on the Playstation 2. Just be warned that while the difficulty has been toned down some from the original DMC 3 it's still a tough game!
Strengths: New fighting styles and weapons to choose from. Different styles comes with different moves. Great graphics. Able to play both Dante and Vergil.
Weakness: Hard to master all the moves. Devil Trigger is not really all that useful. Hard to get bouns arts.
Dante is back! This time, the game takes place from the events before the first game of the series. Some answers about Dante's past from the first game can also be found in this game.
Devil May Cry 3 offers new fighting styles to choose from, the player can choose the style that is more suitable to play with. The styles can be enhanced through upgrade and new moves would also be earned. Different styles offer different types of moves that can help player to get through the game. This game also offer some new and different weapons other than the basic sword and guns. The game utilizes PS2's power quite well and is able to offer better and sharper graphics than the previous two games. The bosses are bigger too.
Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition offers adjusted difficulty levels, the Joker as boss, and ability to play as Dante and Vergil. Special Edition also offer the Super Sparda and Super Corrupt Vergil, a.k.a. Nelo Angelo, after completing the "Must Die" mode for the corresponding character. The Super Sparda and Super Corrupt Vergil were not offered in the original Devil May Cry 3, only Super Dante and Super Vergil were offered.
Despite all the improvements, like the styles and moves, and new things from the previous two games, the game still have its flaws. With all the different combinations of styles and weapons, the characters can have different moves, the basic ones are easy to master, but some moves require precise timing and button smashing and it is not that easy to master them all. The Devil Trigger in this game, like Devil Trigger in the previous game, is not that useful at all. Sure, it offers some increase in attack power, life recovering, and special moves depends on the weapon and style, however, the enhancements with Devil Trigger is not all that breathtaking. Sometimes it is hard to tell whether Devil Trigger is used or not. To get the bonus arts, it requires completing the games several times with high ranks. Therefore, it is hard to get them all, not impossible, just hard and time consuming for some.
For the fans of the series, the game offers some answers that they wanted to know and some fun time playing it. For the casual gamers, this game is good but time consuming if trying to get all the bonus materials. Overall, this is a good game and recommended for those that like to play this types of games.
Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition is an action game that expands upon the original DMC 3. There have been several improvements. There's lots of things to unlock. Devil May Cry 3 has lots of action. In this special edition you get to play Virgil once you finish playing through as Dante. Overall the gameplay is pretty fun.
Strengths: bonus material that wasn't in the original Devil May Cry 3, easier continue system, customizable fighting system
Weakness: still pretty hard, very button mashy
Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition is a great game on its own merits. Everything that was in the original DMC3 is here plus some extras like a second playable character and they've made the game a bit easier. So if you haven't tried any Devil May Cry game, DMC3: SE is definitely worth the $20 if you're looking for an action game.
The weaknesses in the game are the same ones that come with any Capcom game - mainly that their games are difficult. The enemies in Devil May Cry 3 are pretty relentless; you'll often face 3 or more enemies at the same time with all of them trying to surround you and take cheap shots. To evade them you have to keep moving and this kind of makes the game's speed more insane. Your hands will definitely get a work out playing this game.
If you're looking for something slower paced, I'd recommend the original Devil May Cry.
Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition improves upon the first in many ways, including new difficulties and new playable characters. For the $20 it was released at, it really is a great buy even if you bought the original. The changes are well welcomed as they make it even more enjoyable. The game itself is still a great action game that is loads of fun to play, but the story is still lacking. It is pretty predictable and simple, but it is not to bad, just not that well done. All in all, it is a very good and definitely worth the price tag.
Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition is an excellent action game. The original Devil May Cry 3 is known with its insanely difficult gameplay. Now it has been balanced out in the Special Edition. If you still want to opt for more difficulty there is an added Extremely Hard Mode. Another added feature is the Bloody Palace Mode in which you play it like an arcade and kill an endless army of enemies. Perhaps one of the best bonus in the Special Edition is the playable Virgil.
Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition is released as a Greatest Hits game. So with the $19.99 price point, it's hard not to pick it up!
Strengths: All of the features of the core game, plus an additional playable character, extra difficulty setting, and bonus mode
Weakness: No new cutscenes when playing as Virgil.
Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition is essentially the same game as Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, but some added features make it unique. Players can play as Virgil through all of the game's main missions. Virgil controls somewhat differently from Dante, but all of the actual gameplay, cutscenes, etc. are the same, making him seem a bit out of place. A new boss fight, difficulty setting, and challenge mode are the other major additions. Anyone who hasn't played the original should definitely pick this up, as it is a great action game for a discount price. Those who own the original might consider if the new material is worth a second purchase.

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition
It has only been a little under a year (March 2005 to be exact) since the original Devil May Cry 3 released. Now only ten months later, Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition hits store shelves nation wide. Would one of 2005’s craziest action games deliver the fast and challenging gameplay again? Or would it just be a gimmick with the special edition name tacked onto it? If you haven’t played the...
